Moral of the Month: Respect

Has your child displayed any of the dojo morals lately?

RESPECT  •  INTEGRITY  •  CONSISTENCY  •  DISCIPLINE  •  AWARENESS  •  COMMUNITY/KINDNESS

PATIENCE  •  COURAGE/VALOR  •  HUMILITY  •  PERSEVERENCE  •  GRATITUDE

Please shout it out to us so that we may join in lifting them up.

Respect is more than an act of deference; it is the acknowledgment of the inherent worth and dignity of others. It is an attitude of openness, humility, and recognition that everyone has something unique to offer. When respect is present, individuals feel safe, valued and supported, creating a nurturing environment that fosters personal and collective growth.

Respectfulness is correlated to increased self-awareness, humility, and discipline, as well as better communication and a stronger sense of community and belonging. Respect is essential to healthy relationships, reduced stress and enhanced creativity. When people feel valued, there is room for trust, understanding, innovation, problem solving and more.

"When we respect someone, we are acknowledging and appreciating their role in society or in our life." — Jennifer Freed

In the dojo, the respect between students and instructors cultivates an atmosphere of inclusiveness and learning, empowering individuals to push beyond their limits and unlock their potential. In the martial arts world, respect is also about recognizing the journey, dedication, and expertise of both instructors and fellow practitioners. The martial arts embody respect through their traditions and codes of conduct. From bowing before stepping onto the mats to following the instructions of instructors, martial artists learn to honor the wisdom passed down through generations. The practice of martial arts teaches students to appreciate the effort and skill required to master techniques, fostering respect for the art form itself.

These principles of respect practiced on the mats can be applied beyond the confines of the dojo. We can become catalysts for positive change within our families, workplaces, and communities with consistent respectful practices. Treating others with kindness, engaging in active listening, and acknowledging diverse perspectives are just some of the ways we foster an inclusive environment that promotes respect, growth and understanding.

Respect is contagious, and its impact extends beyond individual interactions. As we practice respect inside and outside of our martial arts community, we become ambassadors for this essential moral. By exemplifying respect in our daily lives, we inspire others to follow suit, creating a ripple effect.

Respect is a virtue that goes beyond politeness or obedience; it is an appreciation for and acceptance of the worth of others and it holds immense value in our daily lives. Let us strive to cultivate respect, transforming our interactions and making a positive impact on those we encounter.
